236,000 Views and HOW Many New Subscribers?!

📚 Hey, good morning! Time to win.

I took the day off yesterday (Sunday for me), and it was BEAUTIFUL.

Restful, restorative, relaxing…all of the things.

And today was sooo much more productive and fun because of it.

That being said, I want to warn you today about “going viral.”

It can certainly be a great thing for your business, but it absolutely depends on what you go viral FOR.

I’ve had reels on Instagram that netted me tens of thousands of followers before, but those reels were about BOOKS, which is exactly what I post about. Therefore, those followers were “targeted,” and their interests perfectly aligned with my brand.

Those reels helped me get to over 100K followers, attract sponsorships and book marketing opportunities, just on and on.

But now, take this post from Threads yesterday:

What do you notice? What stands out?

The views, of course. More than 236,000 when I took this screenshot. It’s WAY more than that now.

Thousands of likes, tons of shares and a few comments.

That’s all well and good, but of those 236,000 views, how many followers do you think I gained - and more importantly, how many newsletter subscribers did I gain?

I could literally count them on one hand.

Threads doesn’t give exact follower counts for some reason, but I started the day at 16.1K followers and ended the day with 16.2K.

And I gained…

THREE newsletter subscribers. (Beehiiv, my email service provider, tells you where exactly each new subscriber comes from). THREE!

Now don’t get me wrong. I’m not complaining. Not at all. Three subscribers are three PEOPLE who now read my emails, get my book recommendations, etc. They’re people I can HELP and positively impact, and I don’t take that for granted.

I just wanted to show you that “going viral” isn’t necessarily the answer.

You have to go viral for the right reasons, and you have to “get famous” to the right people.
