How to Become Bigger Than a Mountain

📚 Hey, good morning! Time to win.

Tomorrow I’ll be publishing my breakdown of Success is a Choice, by John C. Maxwell, but right now I want to share one of my favorite stories from the book.

It concerns Sir Edmund Hillary, the first person ever to reach the summit of Mount Everest, all the way back in 1953:

“Prior to his success on Everest, Hillary had been part of another expedition, in which the team not only had failed to reach the summit but also had lost one of its members.

At a reception for the expedition members in London, Hillary stood to address the audience. Behind the platform was a huge photograph of Everest.

Hillary turned to face the image of the mountain and exclaimed, 'Mount Everest, you have defeated us. But I will return. And I will defeat you. Because you cannot get any bigger, and I can."

“You cannot get any bigger, but I can.” That’s how great men and women approach (and overcome) challenges in this life.

By growing to meet them, not by slinking away.

The whole book is packed with stories and quotes like that - actually here’s one of the funnier ones:

“Some people say that they feel burned out. The truth is that they probably never were on fire in the first place."

The book is phenomenal, and I’ll let you know when my full breakdown comes out, but today, don’t wish for your problems to grow smaller; decide for yourself to become bigger.

Bruce Lee had the right idea too when he asked:

“Do you want an easy life? Or the strength to endure a difficult one?”

Alright, it’s stupid for me to stay up any later, but I’ll consider it a minor victory that I’m going to bed about an hour earlier than last night.
