Don't Quit for Just One More Day
The Power of One More, by Ed Mylett - an excellent book about raising your standards, and going "one more" in all areas of your life
Today on Instagram, I shared a surprisingly good book by an extremely successful entrepreneur and social media sensation, Ed Mylett.
Maybe I shouldn’t have been surprised that the book was so good, but for whatever reason, I didn’t expect to get as much out of it as I actually did.
As you can see in the cover image, the book is called The Power of One More, and here’s what I had to say about it on Instagram:
Unlike most of those 19-year-old “success coaches” you see sharing motivational quotes on Instagram, Ed Mylett is the real deal. He's the author of The Power of One More, but he's also a globally recognized entrepreneur, performance coach, and speaker who has built up a massive social media audience of more than 3,000,000 people in just 4 short years. One of the most powerful ideas in this book is the “internal thermostat,” which is basically equivalent to your STANDARDS.Your thermostat setting represents what you’re “okay with” in your life – your level of fitness, the health of your finances, the strength of your relationships, etc. It’s a gauge of how your life is going and, just as importantly, how you expect it to go in the future.
The overarching theme in this book is, perhaps unsurprisingly, to go “one more” in whatever situation you find yourself in.One more uncomfortable yet necessary conversation, one more rep at the gym, one more sales call, one more attempt before you give up, one more step forward. It’s a deceptively powerful idea. Some people will read it and think, “Is that it? I already knew that!”But then, other people will take the idea of “one more,” they’ll apply it in every subsequent situation, and watch their entire LIVES transform before their very eyes. While I do think that the subtitle is overselling it a bit (this book is not an “ultimate guide” to happiness and success), there are a TON of useful strategies, mindsets, and ideas on basically every page that are sure to assist you greatly in getting to wherever it is that you want to go in life.An "ultimate guide" to happiness and success would be thousands of pages long, but Ed’s book is an excellent first volume.
Since Instagram captions can only be 2,200 characters, I didn’t have enough space to include all the excellent notes I ended up taking on the book too!
As you may (or may not) know, I’ve taken notes on every single book I’ve ever read since 2014. That list is now more than 1,150+ books long, and all my notes are available on my Patreon for just $1.
You can preview 70 of my other book notes and summaries here, but today in this post I want to share with you all my notes from The Power of One More that I couldn’t fit on Instagram:
“You can find your best life by doing ‘one more’ than the world expects from you.”
“Winning is more fun than fun is fun.”
“Your internal thermostat sets the conditions of your life.”
“If your thermostat is set the right way, it will transcend conditions and you will find success no matter what the external conditions are.”
“Unconsciously, we always find a way to get back to where our thermostat is set based on what we think we’re worth.”
“You can’t achieve 100 degrees of fitness or wealth with a thermostat set for 75 degrees of fitness or wealth.”
“Subconsciously, through repetition, your obsessions eventually become your possessions.”
“When you push yourself and empty everything you have inside of you to the point of having nothing left, that’s when everything will be created.”
Mary Anne Radmacher: “Courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes courage is a quiet voice at the end of the day saying, ‘I will try again tomorrow.’”
Dante: “The wisest are the most annoyed at the loss of time.”
“By creating shorter days, my mind believes that each minute becomes more valuable. I don’t waste time, because my sense of urgency is operating at a higher level.”
Schopenhauer: “The common man is not concerned about the passage of time, the man of talent is driven by it.”
Lord Chesterfield: “Take care of the minutes, and the hours will take care of themselves.”
John Wooden: “If you don’t have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it again?”
“You need to spend time thinking about your future because that’s where you’re heading.”
Charles Darwin: “A man who dares to waste one hour of time has not discovered the value of life.”
John Wooden: “You will never outperform your inner circle.”
John Donne: “Any man’s death diminishes me, Because I am involved in mankind, And therefore Never send to know for whom the bell tolls; It tolls for thee.”
“It is not the answer that enlightens, but the question.”
“Is there one more thing I could do?”
“When your brain expects you to be successful, it goes to work putting solutions much closer in reach so that you can take full advantage at all times.”
“Right now, can you tolerate the business results you’re currently getting? Can you tolerate the amount of money you currently make? Can you tolerate the amount of bliss or passion you currently experience? If you can, you’re going to keep getting them.”
“If you don’t change your standards, then your goals are irrelevant.”
“The number one job of a leader is to develop new leaders.”
Ajahn Chah: “If you let go a little, you will have a little peace. If you let go a lot, you will have a lot of peace. If you let go completely, you will have complete peace.”
“If you show me somebody with big enough reasons to change in their life, I’ll show you somebody capable of making that change.”
“Don’t quit for one more day.”
Alright, that’s it for today. Coincidentally, I’m off to the gym right now, and I am prepared to give EVERYTHING in order to realize my personal vision of what my physique could become.
Whatever your personal goals are, though, always remember that you can do “one more.” There is always SOMETHING that you can do to keep moving forward, and it’s absolutely imperative that you do.
And as always, I’m with you.
You don’t have to take that next step alone. The community you have here, and my support, all help to make up your competitive advantage.
All the best,
Matt Karamazov
