It's All a Numbers Game

📚 Hey, good morning! Time to win.

In business, sports, and life, you can score 100 times…

All you have to do is take 10,000 shots.

It’s all a numbers game, and you can improve your results over time by doing two things consistently:

1) Improving your skills

2) Taking more shots

In the beginning, it might take you hundreds, perhaps thousands of attempts to land that first client, that first brand deal, or publish that one video that finally takes off.

But if you make enough attempts, and you commit to getting better and better over time, it’s virtually guaranteed to happen eventually.

Someone will say yes. Some company will want to sponsor you. Some people will love your video enough to share it with all their friends.

For myself, I make a lot of my money working with authors to promote their books.

But even with 108,000 followers right now on Instagram, I still don’t have dozens of authors beating down my door trying to pay me.

I mean, I get plenty of inbound requests, but usually it’s from authors whose books just aren’t very good.

Or maybe the book’s good, but for whatever reason I just don’t think my audience will respond to it, it’s not the right fit, I wouldn’t actually ENJOY talking about the book (that’s huge for me), etc.

So I have to do plenty of outreach. And I don’t mind! That’s just how the game is played. But the math is on my side.

If I maintain a “close rate” of just 0.01%, and if I message 900 authors a month, I will fill up my promotional calendar with two campaigns a week, which earns me about $4,800 a month.

(Full Disclosure: I haven’t hit that number yet. I’ve recently raised my prices and until now I’ve only had the bandwidth to do a few campaigns a month, so my income from author partnerships hasn’t hit that amount yet, but it’s been close.)

I also NEVER promote a book that I don’t believe in, and that I don’t think my audience will like/benefit from.

Trust is EVERYTHING in this business (and in life), and it’s just not worth throwing that all away for a few measly dollars.

But my point is that I can earn a very healthy income (that’s just ONE of my revenue streams, as you may know) just by playing the numbers and keeping up my outreach campaign of 30 authors a day until my promotional calendar is full.

It’s a lot of work, of course, and then I have to actually DELIVER by presenting these great books in the best light, creating the posts, publishing the content, etc. But it can be done.

You can do it too.

Your “vehicle” may be different, but you’re still playing the numbers game.

Reach out to more potential sponsors who might be a good fit for your brand.

Ask more people out on dates.

Pitch more potential investors.

Make more videos…

Long, long day. But good though! Today was the first day this year I’ve been able to read outside (I live in Canada), so that was nice.
