As you might know, The Psychology of Money is this month's Book of the Month inside Creator Launch Academy, and I LOVE this idea from Housel about how saving money is like reclaiming your own future.
Every dollar you can put toward what you'll need in the future is one less dollar that you don't need to earn working for someone else, and by thinking about it in this way - in terms of freedom - you can motivate yourself to do what needs to be done to break those chains.
I REALLY dislike the idea of working for anyone else, and so this really appealed to me.
You're not "depriving" yourself of anything (at least not anything more important than your freedom), you're GIVING yourself the option to buy back your time in the future.
The Psychology of Money is FULL of useful reframes like this, and this is one of my favorite.
It’s also something I teach in my coaching programs, except more in terms of achieving business success. The more you can cut costs on the front end, and funnel more money into fueling your business growth in the beginning, the FASTER you’ll achieve success.
For the longest time, I didn’t go on a ton of fancy vacations, or spend a lot of money eating out. I didn’t spend thousands on the latest iPhone or buy a new every year.
I put everything I could into Facebook ads to grow my newsletter, coaching to grow my skills, social media to grow my following, and more.
Every dollar I saved was taking back a point in my future where I’d still need to have a “real” job before I could go full-time like I have now. I hated working a job, I hated having a boss, I hated not having freedom, and so I did whatever it took to shorten my path to success. No regrets.
Core Lesson: Pay to get ahead. It’s worth it. Not only is it faster, but the forward momentum you’ll generate will feel amazing, and you won’t even miss the things you’re not blowing money on. I LOVED my life when I was still ramping up toward going full time. I didn’t feel deprived! I was pulling out all the stops to make my dream a reality.
