I just turned 36, I had my first $10,000 month, gained more followers in the last few months than ever before…and I’ve never felt more overwhelmed and overloaded than I do right now.
It’s not a fantastic place to be, or at least it doesn’t feel like it - I’m wading through the “invisible progress” that Vahab Hasiri talks about in his great book, The Rubicon Leader.
I bring all this up not to complain though, but rather to show that simplifying your life (and business) and making it work for you is a constant process of adjustment.
And not just adjustment, but elimination too. That’s what July’s Book of the Month, Essentialism, is all about. Elimination, and then relentlessly targeting those very few things that actually matter.
Because if you’re anything like me, you’ve got all these moving parts, and open loops, and revenue streams, and business ideas, and friends you haven’t seen in way too long, and things you want to do…
It’s a lot. And I’m not going to sit here and pretend I have everything figured out.
Although I will say that being overwhelmed at $10K per month is a lot better than being overwhelmed at $2K per month.
But I want to bring this back to Hasiri’s book and the ONLY way forward when you want to become someone new. When you want to drop the dead weight of overwhelm, get organized, and simplify your damn life:
“If you want transformation, stop rearranging the furniture. Tear down the walls. Abandon the identity that holds you back. Commit to the version of you that your future demands. And then, one action at a time, become it.”
There’s something to be said for small-scale incremental change, but then again, sometimes you’ve gotta just bring out your inner Hamlet and “take arms against a sea of troubles.”
(I know that’s not exactly what Hamlet was talking about, but let’s just go with it).
Anyway, you’ve got to change to change. You’ve got to do something different. Something radically different, in many cases.
Not just rearranging the furniture. Not just moving around the deck chairs on the Titanic (again, I’m making this sound more dire than it actually is, but you know what I mean).
Speaking for myself, I’ve got to realize that “enough is enough” and that I need to start RADICALLY simplifying again. I’ve got to really take Greg McKeown’s message in Essentialism to heart, and start making some changes. Start eliminating. Start getting on top of things.
And I need to start taking Vahab Hasiri’s message to heart, and commit to radical transformation. If you’ve been overwhelmed lately in your business, the time for small, little, “safe” actions is over. Time to tear down the walls.

In closing, a lot of things are going well, but in the process of trying to rapidly scale everything and pursue a ton of other opportunities, I’ve just kinda had some things go off the rails. I’m still making great progress, and I’m still on track to hit my most important yearly goals, but yeah…I just wanted to give you the real story tonight, instead of making it seem like everything in my business goes perfectly all the time.
