The writing platform Medium recently announced that they're ending payouts for their referral program, yanking hundreds and hundreds of dollars away from some writers overnight.

Now, myself, I had just a few referrals by the time they stopped recording NEW referrals (this was more than a year ago, I think), and so I was only making $10/month or something like that through the referral program. I won't miss it haha.

But I know more than a few creators who changed their entire content strategy around overnight, centering it around the referral program, writing about it, talking about it, etc. This move devastated their business overnight, and it can happen to any creator on ANY platform.

YouTube doesn't owe you anything. Instagram doesn't owe you anything. Medium doesn't owe you anything - you're one of millions (billions) of users to them.

Of course, that doesn't mean they don't care about their creators AT ALL. Most of them care quite a bit. Instagram and YouTube, for example, are two that I feel WANT their creators to succeed more than some of the other platforms do.

But the point remains.

Don't build your business on rented land.

When you, that land permit can be revoked at any time, leaving you with nothing.

OWN your traffic/customer list, and build your business around THAT.

Still the craziest month/year of my life right now. Just in terms of being scattered and busy and going off in every direction. It’s not sustainable, I don’t like it, and it’s not even all that good for my business haha. Which is why I’m focused on taking the whole month of April (and likely a good portion of May) to consolidate things and streamline my operation.

Of course it doesn’t help that I’m launching a new coaching program, I’ve got several new hires working on growing + building out several arms of my business, I had to spend some time listing and selling my Porsche…plus all the reading I want to get done!!

It’s a lot! I guess is what I’m saying.
