You're NOT Actually Lazy, and You Don't Really Want to Escape Work

First off, I have to stand before you (sit before you) and say that I didn’t get that networking video published on YouTube today like I said I would.

It’s going to be a priority tomorrow (and I think you’re really going to like it and find it valuable), but with updating my Patreon with 40 new book notes, outlining new Medium articles, writing YouTube scripts, coaching clients and responding to members inside the community…I just didn’t get it done.

No excuses, it just didn’t happen.

But here’s a joke to lighten the mood:

Anyway, I was reading my friend Paul’s new book today, Good Work. It’s phenomenal, by the way. I’m enjoying it as much as his first one, The Pathless Path.

But he says something interesting in Good Work that I want to highlight today:

See, Paul left a high-paying consulting job in his late-twenties because it was literally killing him: the stress, the late nights, the meaningless office politics, the empty work.

His story isn’t exactly unique up to that point - plenty of people hate their soul-sucking corporate jobs - but then he basically blew up his own life, gave up everything, and started asking HARD questions about what he actually wanted out of life.

Turns out, it wasn’t anything that the “successful” people around him told him that he should want.

I highly recommend reading both books (I’m about 60 pages into Good Work), but when it comes to your work as a creator, you have a gift that most people don’t have.

At least when you make it to full-time status and go ALL-IN (like I did last year), you can, to a certain extend, travel along your OWN pathless path, following your own curiosity wherever it leads.

You don’t have to live like everyone else. You can see further than they do, because you’ve lifted your sights higher, above the emptiness of the everyday workplace, searching for something better.

Making a living doing that isn’t easy. I’ve had times in the past year that challenged my resolve as well. Made me question whether I shouldn’t get another part-time job or something to keep myself going while I figured out this monetization thing.

But I didn’t quit. I kept going. And even though I rejected that “Ordinary World” a long time ago, it wasn’t because I was lazy. You’re probably not lazy either. We just crave work we care about. And are willing to do whatever it takes to find it.
